Dantilion Crow paced on the deck of The Murderer’s Nest. He’d been doing so for hours despite knowing how nervous it made the crew. Their nerves didn’t concern him. He’d had no word yet from any of the other ships. He judged that sailing from Black Rat Cove to Dragon Isle should have taken only a little longer than their own journey from Shadow Point. That meant the target ship should’ve arrived by now. Assuming it was even coming.

It is. Dagon’s servants must not be allowed to reach the cave.

“How can you be so sure?” Dantilion still didn’t fully understand the entity that spoke to him through his sword. It called itself The Void and it granted him immense power in exchange for performing the occasional task. And the promises it made about his future made his mouth water with greed.

The dragon is their only hope of victory should my plan succeed. Why else would they rescue the only person outside the fleet that knew where to find the isle?

Dantilion didn’t have an answer to that and so kept quiet. The hunting hadn’t been great lately anyway. A few days or a week guarding the island wouldn’t matter.

You will guard it until either my plan has succeeded or Dagon’s servants are dead. Is that clear?

He bristled. Taking orders had never been his strong suit—that’s how he ended up a pirate after all—and taking them from an inanimate object felt ridiculous.

“We can’t just sit here forever. Eventually my men will get bored. And bored pirates are nothing but trouble.”

Pain ran through his thigh where the sword rested and traveled up his leg to his hip continuing on to his chest where it wrapped around his heart with a grip like iron. He stopped and staggered, leaning against the mainmast to keep from hitting his knees.

The Void had never done that before. He didn’t even know it could.

You will do as I say. If your men become a problem, they can be converted to voidlings. You can also be converted to a mindless puppet. The only reason I refrain from doing these things is that you are more use to me as a thinking bearer. Should that change…

The sword’s voice trailed off along with the pain in his chest. Perhaps he’d been kidding himself, thinking he commanded the sword and not the other way around. Sure, he knew it had a mind of its own, sort of, but the power and promises it made far outweighed anything else.

Now he wondered, quietly and only in the very back of his mind, if he’d made a bad bargain.

Dantilion would have to be extremely careful as he moved forward lest he wind up as dead as Jerrod.

A faint warmth spread through his leg and for a moment he feared the sword had heard his thoughts and deemed them rebellious enough to carry out his threat. Then he remembered the amulet he’d put in his pocket earlier.

Blowing out a breath and calming himself he pulled the amulet out and said, “Go ahead.
